As if you hadn’t had enough Stylophone goodness in your life already, along comes the Stylosette Keys, sounding just like what it is — a mixture of stylophone with a compact cassette design (no actual cassettes were harmed in the making of this instrument).
No stylus required here, either. Just use you finger to make contact with the touch-sensitive metal surface of the ‘keys’ to generate sounds.
The Stylosette is just 10cm wide and runs off two triple-A batteries, so is ultra portable. As well as having a few onboard effects such as delay, vibrato and octave shift, it can also be connected to other devices via the expansion port.
We say “devices” — connection options can include conductive objects such as fruits, vegetables or cutlery. That as well as external synths or a second Stylosette.
This greatly expands the potential for learning and perhaps makes this more than simply a quirky novelty for beginners or enthusiasts.
With a price tag of around $40, it’s worth a punt too.
