This summer, NUX launched its portable digital piano, the NPK-200, offering a decent playing experience in a transportable form factor.
A lot of portable pianos don’t put in full piano action keyboards, partly due to their weight, but the NPK-200 features the WKJ-03 triple-sensor scaled hammer action keyboard with escapement as used on earlier models such as the NPK-10, NPK-20, and NUX’s upright digital pianos.
Despite that, and the fact it has full speakers built-in, the 88-key instrument still weighs in at just over 11kg.
There are 30 sounds on board, including several acoustic pianos, electric pianos, and strings. Effects include reverb, chorus and delay, plus tone brightness adjustment. There’s also sound layering and keyboard split.
Unusually for an instrument marketed as a digital piano, NUX has included a vertical touch slider which can be used to alter the sounds in real time, such as adding vibrato or volume changes.
Auto-accompaniments are nothing new but the NPK-200 features what it claims are intelligent pianist accompaniment styles and dynamic drum rhythms. That could just be marketing speak though, and we’re not sure if AI is employed on board or not.
Connections wise, there’s audio and MIDI over both USB and Bluetooth, while dual 10W speakers offer a decent onboard sound experience — alternatively the keyboard can be hooked up to external amplification.
Finally, although this is portable and can be used with many lightweight stands or simply on a desktop or other flat surface, an optional stand and pedal bar are available.
