Experimental musician Andrew Huang has commissioned audiovisual artist/woodworker Love Hultén to build him a bespoke synth.
The custom effects processor — which Huang has named either the Glitch Box, the Refractor, the Refraction Engine, or something nerdy or otherwise from the crowd — is currently one-of-a-kind but it is totally repeatable if you want one.
Five Pedals
It features five guitar pedals:
- Empress Echosystem – delay pedal
- Hologram Microcosm – granular looper and glitch pedal
- Red Panda Tensor – live reverse and tape stop effects
- Red Panda Raster v2 – digital delay with pitch/frequency shifter
- Empress Reverb – reverb pedal
Yellow buttons on the panel are a bypass for each pedal. It also contains a varifluid visualiser and a kill switch.
As Huang himself suggests, what the unit perhaps loses in terms of being able to reorder and patch the pedals, because they’re all enclosed, it makes up for in just being a moveable, ready unit which is likely to be used far more because of it.
