Roland GP Grand Piano Series features and comparison

Roland has introduced its new line of GP digital grand pianos, offering a grand piano experience even to those pianists with limited home or studio space.

Initially launching with four models:

  • GP-3 Micro Grand
  • GP-6 Mini Grand
  • GP-9 Grand Piano
  • GP-9M Grand Piano

Each successive numbered model is physically larger and has more premium features than the previous one, while the GP-9M is identical to the GP-9 but also features a “moving keys” function which allows the piano to play back onboard library/MIDI files while automatically moving the corresponding keys.

The GP piano sounds exist solely in the digital realm, yet the varying size designs, based on traditional acoustic grand pianos, not only lend a certain visual grandeur to whatever setting they are placed in, but also assist in projecting a realistic sound into the room. Just as with an acoustic grand, the top lid opens to offer broader, richer sound projection.

Roland’s “Piano Reality” is a system which marries together every aspect of the instrument, from the sound engine, keyboard look, feel and response, pedals, audio and speakers. Advanced modelling technology reproduces the complete sound-generating properties of an acoustic instrument, from the soundboard material and frame to strings, hammers and more. The higher end instruments also feature a piano design control panel allowing for crafting the desired sound.

Whereas a lot of digital pianos rely heavily on sound sampling technology, Roland uses a modelling technology which includes algorithms and powerful processing to more faithfully recreate the tonal qualities of an acoustic grand piano.

As well as the sound quality itself, this model allows for unlimited polyphony in piano mode in all but the basic (GP-3) model. All other sounds have an impressive 256 note polyphony at their disposal.

Each instrument features genuine hammer action, hybrid wood keys with ivory feel, ultra-detailed sensing, and a high performance trio of pedals. Multiple speakers are strategically placed to provide an immersive sound experience, while the touch controls are designed to disappear when the backlighting is turned off, adding to the visual appeal of the instrument.

Connectivity includes use of the Roland Piano App, plus Bluetooth MIDI allowing for wireless connection to apps, or playback of existing files.
