One of the most popular new instruments on Kickstarter is the Tembo, a magnetic step sequencer and sampler which lets you build rhythms and sequences simply by placing magnetic discs onto the grid and then jamming with it.
First off, the Tembo looks gorgeous, with a natural wooden look just itching to be touched.

Whether using any of the built-in sounds, or recording and sampling your own, it’s quick and easy to build beats simply by placing the disc magnet onto any of the squares in the 8×5 grid.
This is a 16-step sequencer — the sixteen steps are ‘unlocked’ by either flipping a single disc or stacking two together.
It can be enjoyed by beginners and pros alike — its tactile nature invites anyone to just start playing and creating. No complicated menus or settings – just experimentation and creation.
Tembo has a built-in speaker, mic and line inputs, USB MIDI, session recording, looper and sampler, and simple controls for assigning samples and adding audio effects.
The Tembo project has already raised nearly $1.5m and there’s limited time left to secure one of the initial models. Hopefully if it’s this popular, it will have more manufacturing runs in due course.
