Electronics design co-operative UltraPalace has announced a Kickstarter project to see three new synths in the M0SS Family launched.
Following on from last year’s M0SS-101 virtual analog monosynth using subtractive synthesis, the company wants to launch the M0SS-201, M0SS-309 and M0SS-416 tiny rugged synths.
Each interface is designed to be intuitive, hands-on and fun. It can be as simple as pressing a button to select a parameter and then turning the encoder to modify the value.
M0SS-201

A west coast monosynth taking inspiration from the Buchla Easel, packed with features to inspire experimentation into advanced synthesis. It features complex oscillators:
- OS1 is a modulation oscillator with triangle, square and sawtooth waveforms, optional key-tracking and LFO capabilities;
- OSC2 is an audio oscillator with sine and triangle waveforms.
- There’s also a modulation bus offering AM, FM and TM modulation modes.
The stochastic generator stores up to 32 random values and outputs the next value when stepped. It can be tweaked to determine how random and mutating the sound becomes over time.
The pitch quantiser sets the frequency of the audio oscillator to the nearest scale note, with 11 scale options including microtonal.
There’s plenty more including a looping envelope, mixer, wave folder, amp, modulation, delay, and full MIDI functionality, plus generous memory slots and high-quality audio output.
M0SS-309

A hybrid of classic polysynths of the ’70s and ’80s, featuring nine voices of polyphony, two oscillators, resonant filter and two envelopes per voice.
It has features such as FM and hard sync for wide-ranging texture control, plus master FX. It also has variants of many of the features found on the M0SS-201.
M0SS-416

A six-operator FM synth based on the DX7, but with a labelled physical interface for each parameter, so you can design or modify sounds in real time without having to look at a screen or menu diving.
It’s fully compatible with DX7 .sys files, and is based on the Dexed open source DX7 emulator.
It has 16 voices of stereo polyphony, 192 classic sounds plus 99 additional user patch slots, SD and MIDI SySex support, a LED numeric display, and PCM5100 stereo DAC for audio output.
Support
At time of writing, the project has raised well over the required funding, with one hundred backers. There are still some things to do but the project is well on its way to completion.
