Sustainability is something all manufacturers and consumers need to think about. Musical instruments use a significant number of resources and finding ways to reduce the impact of their construction on the environment should be considered.
Yamaha has introduced the TORCH T01 digital piano as a concept in using surplus materials from other projects in the construction of the instrument.
The keys of the piano are made from unused African Blackwood, which is used to make woodwind instruments such as clarinets and oboes. The high ratio of pulverised wood in the keys gives them the black colour, which develops even greater character with time and use.
Standard PVC sheets were avoided when designing the piano exterior, with Yamaha instead using laser-engraving technology and natural oil hand-finishing to accentuate the natural texture and characteristics of the wood.
The seat of the chair features materials such as Hinoki cypress.
Not only is this reclamation or altering of materials of ecological benefit, but it has the happy side-effect of letting the instrument gracefully age over time. The colour of the keys will change with continued play, and the body will also change dependent on the ambient temperature and other factors where the piano is used.
The piano includes Yamaha’s flagship CFX concert grand piano and Bösendorfer Imperial concert grand samples, with the keyboard using the GrandTouch-S system.
The TORCH T01 is currently only destined for the Japanese market, with only twenty units being released. As a concept, it is likely Yamaha will develop future good environmental practices based on what is learned from this limited edition model.
In April 2026, the TORCH T01 won the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2026. The Red Dot Design Award is a German design award hosted by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen that is highly respected around the world. Winners were selected by a jury of around 40 international experts.
