With Yamaha announcing the launch of the Genos2 it’s clearly a step up from the Genos but also is pitted alongside Yamaha’s other high-end arranger workstations, the PSR-SX900 and PSR-SX700. We have already compared the PSR-S and PSR-SX models but now we provide a summary and spec sheet for the Genos2 versus the two high end PSR-SX models.
Comparison
The Genos2 is clearly a little bigger and heavier than its PSR-SX counterparts, due in part to it having 76 keys rather than the 61 on PSR-SX models. This is despite the PSR-SX models having built-in speakers, which the Tyros2 doesn’t.
All models have organ-style keys, though the PSRs are FSB while the Tyros2 is FSX. More noticeably, the Genos2 has aftertouch whereas the PSRs don’t.
The Genos2 has rather more controls, including three times the control knobs, nine Live control sliders with LED gauge, and three articulation switches. Pitch bend and modulation is handled on all three models by the joystick, which is more freely assignable on the Genos2.
AWM stereo sampling sound generation technology is available on all three models, with the Genos2 also offering AEM and FM.
All models have a large functional colour touchscreen display. The Tyros2 has an additional sub display. As a result of this, the Genos2 has around three times the polyphony, at 384 versus 128, but this is due to the additional sound engines and some restrictions may still be in place depending on which sounds are used.
Genos2 has significantly more preset voices and drum/SFX kits and featured voices. It also has at least three times the space for expansion voices, at 3GB compared to 1GB on the PSR-SX900 and 400MB on the PSR-SX700.
Similarly, there are considerably more of most types of effect on the Genos2, although the PSRs do hold their own very well and certainly could not be seen as lacking.
The Tyros2 and PSR-SX900 both have identical vocal harmony presets and settings, where the PSR-SX700 has none. The number of accompaniments is also greater on the Tyros2, though all fingering modes still exist including AI Full Keyboard. The Genos2 has many more multi pad presets than the PSR-SXs.
When it comes to onboard recording, there’s still a 16 track limit on all models, but unlimited number of songs (dependent on drive capacity) and around 3MB limit per song.
Most of the other specifications are very similar, with the notable addition of a USB audio interface on the Tyros2, standard HDMI video output, and a wireless LAN.
Price wise, the RRPs are as follows:
- Tyros2: $6,599 (currently retailing at $5,599.99)
- PSR-SX900: $2,799 (currently retailing at $2,299.99)
- PSR-SX700: $1,999
